Home Sweet Home

When we started this renovation, this home was cold, outdated and neglected. The kitchen was small and felt like a cave. The living room was oddly shaped and not functional for a family. The master bathroom was small, with no privacy, and hadn’t been touched since the 60’s. Each of the bedrooms were dark and the landscaping had completely overtaken the yard. Although the house looked like something out of a horror film… we loved the character, the integrity of the midcentury architecture, and knew this house’s story was far from done.

We recaptured the formal dining room in order to extend the kitchen. We added a 10 foot island and maximized cabinet storage and counter space. We kept the existing windows and love how much natural light they let in! We took out the original breakfast nook that jetted out into the living room (which had a total DJ box in a club vibe). This allowed for more square footage in the living room and the opportunity to add a dining room “zone.” So, although the living room and dining room are technically in the same space, we were able to create zones with lighting, artwork, furniture placement and rugs. The master bedroom had multiple closets, so we decided to do away with one of the larger closets and utilize that space for a large walk-in shower. The original placement of the shower was reconfigured to become a water closet, which allowed for more privacy.

By adding modern finishes, using a neutral color pallet throughout, and maintaining the original architecture and trim, we successfully blended transitional, mid century modern and modern-farmhouse styles, and were honored to bring this home back to life. The original story of this house is honored, and the next chapter of this home’s life has a lot of stories left to tell!
